Alex began playing fiddle at the age of eight and became highly involved in the worlds of bluegrass and country music. When he was not performing concerts, he would spend a lot of time going to fiddle competitions throughout the eastern United States. From 2006 to 2009 Alex held three titles as the Georgia state fiddle champion, two titles as the Kentucky state fiddle champion, and two titles as the Alabama state fiddle champion. During these years he also began to pick up guitar and banjo as secondary instruments to play in a few bands he was performing with at the time. When Alex turned sixteen years of age he joined his high school’s Varsity Singers and developed a passion for choral music and singing and later pursued a bachelor’s degree choral singing and performance at Piedmont University. While in his undergraduate years, Alex took composition lessons in the choral and orchestral realms and became the first student to win the GMEA Composition Competition at the collegiate level two years in a row. In the fall of 2017 Alex started his master’s degree in theory and composition at Westminster Choir College. He continued singing and performing with various ensembles at the school and was privileged to perform in some amazing venues with world class musicians, including a performance at Carnegie Hall with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Kimmel Center with the Philadelphia Orchestra, at Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic, and was an artist in residence Oxford University for their summer choral conducting program in 2019.
